St Kilda Penguins

St Kilda Pier
St Kilda Penguins

Did you know that St Kilda is home to a colony of little penguins?

Every evening at dusk little penguins swim up the breakwater and hang out in the rocks until sunrise.

We were there before the sunset and we saw 2 of the sweet little guys. It was great, because it wasn't dark and they were easy to spot in the rocks. If you are there later, you can bring a torch - but please cover it in red celeophane to avoid scaring the penguins.

Walk towards the end of St Kilda Pier. In winter it is C.O.L.D. so rug up. In summer there are usually more penguins and the best time to see them is after dark.

Please remember this is there home and although it is SO exciting to see the penguins please:

- do not use your flash when taking photos

- do not use selfie sticks to get closer photos

- do not try and pick up or touch the penguins

- do not climb on the rocks, there are observation areas that are so close, there's just no need
